US Ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman Resigns Amid Controversy

Nairobi, November 13, 2024 — US Ambassador to Kenya, Meg Whitman, has announced her resignation, citing an honor and privilege in serving while emphasizing her efforts to strengthen US-Kenyan relations. Her tenure, marked by significant achievements and deep controversy, leaves a complex legacy.

In a statement released today, Whitman expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to enhance the partnership between the United States and Kenya. “I am proud of leading a people-centered agenda that saves lives, increases security, and creates economic opportunities for Kenyans and Americans,” she said. Whitman highlighted key accomplishments, including emergency funding for catastrophic flooding in 2023 and the ongoing fight against malaria, HIV, and MPOX.

One of Whitman’s notable achievements was elevating Kenya as the first Major Non-NATO ally in sub-Saharan Africa, reflecting a shared commitment to democratic values and security. Her tenure also saw a boost in US investment and trade with Kenya, driven by her “Why Africa, Why Kenya?” initiative aimed at American companies. Consular services also improved significantly under her leadership, reducing wait times for non-immigrant visa appointments from over two years to about two months.

Despite these successes, Whitman’s term was marred by controversy. She faced significant criticism from Kenyans who perceived her as overly supportive of the Kenyan government. Her perceived though not proven involvement, particularly during the Finance Bill protests, drew ire from the public who accused her of meddling in local politics. The backlash intensified hopes among some Kenyans for her recall following Donald Trump’s election victory.

Kenyans took to social media platforms to express mixed reactions to her resignation.

Whitman addressed her resignation, attributing it to the change in US administration. “Like all U.S. ambassadors, I serve at the request of the President. The American people have spoken, and a new President will be inaugurated in January,” she stated. She also expressed confidence in the continued strength of US-Kenyan relations, lauding the efforts of her team and the bilateral relationship’s 60-year history.

Chargé d’Affaires Marc Dillard will assume leadership of the US Embassy in Nairobi following Whitman’s departure. Whitman leaves with a sense of fulfillment and gratitude, optimistic about the future of US-Kenyan ties. “Our relations are stronger than ever, and I am confident this trajectory will continue,” she concluded.

Whitman’s resignation marks the end of a controversial yet impactful chapter in the history of US-Kenyan diplomacy. As the political landscape shifts, both nations look towards maintaining and building upon the foundation laid during her tenure.
