US Ambassador Meg Whitman Bids Farewell with Heartfelt Video Message

Nairobi, Kenya – On November 13, 2024, US Ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman announced her resignation, marking the end of a notable tenure. In a heartfelt video message released today, Whitman expressed her deep gratitude for the opportunity to serve and highlighted the significant achievements and cherished memories of her time in Kenya.

Mambo VP. It has been an incredible honor to serve as the US ambassador to Kenya for the past two years.” Whitman began, speaking directly to the Kenyan people. Since her arrival in August 2022, she has traveled extensively across 28 counties, witnessing firsthand the collaborative efforts between the United States and Kenya in various sectors. Her travels and engagements have allowed her to meet many Kenyans who are dedicated to creating jobs, improving healthcare, building a stronger democracy, and strengthening bilateral ties.

Whitman took the opportunity to reflect on the key milestones achieved during her tenure. She proudly noted the substantial improvements in consular services, reducing non-immigrant visa appointment wait times from over two years to about two months. Her “Why Africa, Why Kenya?” initiative significantly boosted US investment and trade with Kenya, while emergency funding for catastrophic flooding in 2023 and ongoing efforts against malaria, HIV, and MPOX showcased her commitment to a people-centered agenda.

I’ve also had the privilege of sharing Kenya’s inspiring stories with Americans back home, connecting with US business leaders looking to invest in the Silicon Savannah and participating in the historic White House visit with President Ruto, the first state visit by an African head of state since 2008,” Whitman recounted. She emphasized that her time as ambassador began with the question, “Why Africa? Why Kenya?” and concluded with the realization that Kenya’s potential is now widely recognized.

While celebrating these accomplishments, Whitman did not shy away from addressing the controversies that marked her term. She faced significant criticism from some Kenyans who perceived her as overly supportive of the Kenyan government, particularly during the Finance Bill protests. Despite these challenges, Whitman remained optimistic about the future of US-Kenyan relations.

There is so much that I will always treasure about my time in Kenya, from the beautiful landscapes to the dynamic economy. But most of all, I will remember the people of Kenya who welcomed me with unparalleled hospitality and showed me their passion for building a stronger US-Kenya relationship,” Whitman expressed with gratitude. She acknowledged the friendships and connections she has made, which have left a lasting impact on her.

Chargé d’Affaires Marc Dillard will assume leadership of the US Embassy in Nairobi following Whitman’s departure. Whitman concluded her video message with a hopeful outlook for the future, stating, “I am thankful I had the opportunity to serve as the US ambassador to Kenya and for the lasting friendships I have made along the way. Asante sana.

Whitman’s resignation marks the end of a complex yet impactful chapter in US-Kenyan diplomacy. As both nations navigate the transition, the foundation laid during her tenure will serve as a strong basis for continued collaboration and mutual growth.
