Aga Khan IV, Spiritual Leader of Ismaili Muslims, Dies at 88

Lisbon, Portugal — Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, known worldwide as the Aga Khan IV, passed away peacefully in Lisbon on February 4, 2025, at the age of 88, surrounded by his family. His death marks the end of an era for the millions of Shia Ismaili Muslims he led as their 49th hereditary Imam.

The Aga Khan, who was considered by his followers to be a direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad, was announced as the new spiritual leader at the youthful age of 20, while he was still studying at Harvard University. His life was one of remarkable dedication to both spiritual leadership and global philanthropy, leveraging his vast wealth to aid the underprivileged and promote development across the world.

His Highness was not only a revered spiritual figure but also a prominent figure in the international community. His wealth, estimated by Forbes in recent years to be between $1 billion and $13 billion, was largely channeled through the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), which employs around 96,000 people and focuses on health, education, and economic development in Asia, Africa, and other regions.

The Aga Khan’s contributions extended beyond spiritual guidance; he was known for his passion for horse racing, where his thoroughbreds, like the legendary Shergar, achieved significant victories. His interests also included ski racing and the development of luxury tourism spots like the Costa Smeralda in Sardinia.

Global leaders have paid tribute to his legacy. French President Emmanuel Macron described him as an “inspirational” figure for his commitment to peace and tolerance, while King Charles III of the United Kingdom expressed being “deeply saddened” by the loss of his “personal friend.” Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum of Dubai highlighted the Aga Khan’s role as a “true friend” and a leader who transcended religious and cultural boundaries.

The Ismaili community, spread across 35 countries with an estimated 12 to 15 million followers, now looks to the future with the announcement of Prince Rahim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan V as the new Imam, following the reading of his father’s will. This transition continues the centuries-old tradition known as nass, where the successor is designated by the previous Imam.

The Aga Khan’s passing has left a void in both the spiritual and developmental spheres he so profoundly influenced. Memorial services are planned across the globe, with his burial set to take place in Lisbon. The community and the world at large mourn a leader whose life was a testament to the principles of peace, tolerance, and human development.

This news has sparked numerous discussions and reflections, with posts on X highlighting his contributions and the impact of his leadership on the Ismaili community and beyond. His legacy will undoubtedly be remembered as one that intertwined spiritual leadership with a significant commitment to improving the human condition.
