Heartbreak in Githurai: CCTV Footage Uncovers Shocking Abuse of Infant by Househelp

In a heartbreaking incident that has shaken a young family in Githurai, Nairobi, home surveillance footage has revealed disturbing behavior by a househelp towards a five-month-old baby under her care. What was meant to be a normal day turned into a moment of horror and disbelief when the child’s parents, Edward Waruguru and his wife, reviewed their CCTV footage only to witness what no parent ever wants to see.
The nanny, entrusted with caring for the baby girl, was caught on camera committing an act that many have since labeled as “bizarre” and “inhumane.”
The chilling video shows the househelp, who appeared distracted by a television program while feeding the baby porridge, quickly growing frustrated when the infant began to cry. In what can only be described as an appalling reaction, she set the bowl of porridge aside, removed the baby’s napkin, and then did something truly shocking.
Using the same napkin, she pressed it tightly against the baby’s mouth—seemingly in an effort to stifle the cries. The pressure startled the baby, who wailed upon the release of the napkin, only to have it forcefully tapped back against her mouth moments later. The video paints a disturbing picture of a caregiver who, rather than soothing the child, responded with frustration and aggression.
Understandably devastated, the parents acted immediately. Edward Waruguru, speaking in a heart-wrenching interview, shared how the discovery left him and his wife broken and in utter disbelief.
“She was supposed to be a helper, someone we trusted with our precious child. Watching that footage… it felt like betrayal,” Edward said.
The family promptly fired the househelp and filed a report at a local police station, submitting the CCTV footage as evidence to support their claims. The incident has since sparked outrage among local residents and netizens alike, many calling for more stringent vetting of domestic workers and better protection for children in home-care settings.
This case also underscores the growing importance of home surveillance in ensuring the safety of vulnerable family members. For this family, that CCTV camera proved to be more than just a security measure—it was a silent witness to a hidden horror.
As investigations continue, the Githurai community and beyond are watching closely, hoping for justice and raising questions about the welfare of children under the care of domestic workers.
