Kenyan Businessman Khalif Kairo Charged with Tax Fraud of Kshs 1.28 Million

Nairobi, Kenya – May 26, 2025
Prominent Kenyan businessman Joseph Kairo Wambui, widely known as Khalif Kairo, has been charged with tax fraud involving Kshs 1,283,830, following an investigation by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA). The charges were filed at Nyeri Law Court, where Kairo and his company, Kai & Karo Limited, were accused of fraudulent evasion of customs duty.

According to a statement from KRA, the investigation revealed that Kairo, as the director of Kai & Karo Limited, knowingly misdeclared a Land Rover Range Rover Vogue as a used Land Rover Range Rover Sport on January 10, 2024. This misdeclaration was allegedly an attempt to underpay customs duties by the aforementioned amount. “Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) investigations established that Kairo… knowingly misdeclared [the vehicle] to evade payment of customs duty of Ksh1,283,830,” the KRA stated, as reported by Kenyans.co.ke on May 26, 2025.

Kairo, a 28-year-old entrepreneur born on November 6, 1996, has made a name for himself as the CEO of Kai & Karo Limited, a Nairobi-based car dealership specializing in new and used vehicles, spare parts, and accessories. The company also operates as a global sourcing and shipping firm, according to its official website. Beyond the automotive industry, Kairo is the founder of Jetman Global, an aviation consultancy firm offering aircraft acquisition, sales, and management services across Africa.

The businessman pleaded not guilty to the charges and was released on a bond of Kshs 500,000. However, this is not Kairo’s first brush with legal trouble. Reports indicate that he has faced multiple lawsuits over business deals gone sour, including a recent appearance at Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi on January 13, 2025, alongside his lawyers Cliff Ombeta and Danstan Omari.

The case has sparked significant discussion on social media platforms like X, where KBC Channel 1 News first broke the story on May 26, 2025, at 10:22 UTC. Public reactions have been mixed, with some users labeling Kairo a “fraudster” rather than a businessman, while others speculated that his legal troubles may be politically motivated. One user,

@RyanGithag38910, suggested that Kairo’s high-profile activism during the 2024 Finance Bill protests might have made him a target for government scrutiny, drawing parallels to other Kenyan businessmen like Ronald Karauri, the Kasarani MP who transitioned into politics after his tenure at SportPesa. Another user,

@DerrickGeo12777, commented, “Never announce your wealth utakua target,” implying that Kairo’s public declaration of being a billionaire may have drawn unwanted attention.

This case comes amid heightened efforts by Kenyan authorities to crack down on tax evasion, a persistent issue in the country. A 2022 investigation by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) highlighted a complex tax evasion scheme involving Afrigo Development Limited, a Kenyan real estate firm with ties to the Chinese government, which siphoned over $200 million through fake loans and fictional imports routed via Mauritius. The Kenyan government has since vowed to intensify its fight against tax dodging, a promise that appears to be reflected in the KRA’s pursuit of high-profile cases like Kairo’s.

Kairo’s legal battles underscore the challenges faced by young entrepreneurs in Kenya, where success often attracts both admiration and scrutiny. As the case unfolds, it remains to be seen how it will impact Kairo’s business ventures and his public image, which has been shaped by his social media presence and entrepreneurial achievements.
