Car Dealer Khalif Kairo Arrested for Alleged Fraud

Nairobi, Kenya – On Tuesday, car dealer Joseph Kairo Wambui, also known as Khalif Kairo, was arrested by police on suspicion of obtaining money by false pretenses. The arrest was confirmed by Justus Ombati, the Kasarani Sub-County criminal investigations officer, who stated that Kairo is currently detained at the Kasarani Police Station.

Kairo was apprehended at one of his car yards in the city after allegedly defrauding a client, identified as Murimi, of KSh 26 million. The client had paid Kairo for a high-end Range Rover that was never delivered. Ombati revealed that Kairo had been elusive in either refunding the money or delivering the car, leading to multiple complaints being filed against him.

Kairo, who also has a significant social media presence, was arrested alongside three of his employees. He is accused of similar fraudulent activities in other regions, with complaints filed at the Nairobi Area Regional Police and Gigiri Police Station.

Prominent activist Cyprian Nyakundi took to social media to highlight the incident, noting that Kairo was arrested in Ridgeways and is facing possible arraignment. Kairo’s lawyer is currently negotiating with the complainant to resolve the issue, with the lawyer claiming that a pending debt of KSh 6 million to the car supplier had delayed the vehicle’s release.

The arrest has sparked reactions on social media, with mixed opinions about Kairo’s situation. While some expressed disappointment and urged honest business practices, others showed support for Kairo, suggesting that such challenges are common in growing businesses.

Kairo himself responded on social media, downplaying the incident and assuring his followers that he would overcome the challenges. He stated that litigation and financial issues are normal for entrepreneurs, especially when a company is expanding.

Despite the ongoing negotiations, police have emphasized that they will take necessary action if required, as Kairo remains under arrest for obtaining money by false pretenses. The case continues to unfold, with more details expected in the coming days.
