Violent Disruption at Limuru Funeral Sparks Outrage and Investigations

Limuru, Kenya – November 29, 2024
A funeral service in Limuru for the late Erastus Nduati turned violent yesterday when armed attackers disrupted the ceremony, prompting investigations by the National Police Service (NPS). The former Deputy President, who was in attendance, has publicly condemned the incident, linking it to the recent withdrawal of his security detail.
In a statement posted on his social media, the former Deputy President detailed the harrowing experience. He explained that he and other mourners, including children, were attacked by goons armed with stones, machetes, iron bars, and sticks. The attackers targeted mourners indiscriminately, even using plastic seats as weapons. A specific group followed him to his car, attacking it with stones and iron bars, forcing him to drive away under a barrage of rocks.
“This is a very sad state of affairs and a major low for the state, who were clearly complicit in these actions,” he wrote, expressing his concern for the safety of mourners and the grieving family who had to flee despite their profound grief. He emphasized his commitment to supporting Kenyans in need and condemned the violent disruption.
The National Police Service has responded with a press statement from the Office of the Inspector General. According to the statement, the incident occurred while Hon. Peter Mungai Mwathi, former Limuru Member of Parliament, was addressing mourners at Bibirioni Boys High School. Unknown individuals began hurling objects and chairs, causing panic and chaos among the attendees. Property damage was reported, but only one official complaint has been filed so far.
The NPS clarified that Hon. Peter Mwathi was not arrested and is not a person of interest in their investigation. DCI Limuru has initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the fracas and to identify and apprehend those responsible. Officers are currently on the ground recording statements from the family of the deceased and other witnesses.
The NPS has called on anyone with information that could aid in the arrest of the suspects to report to the nearest police station. Dr. Resila Onyango, PhD, HSC, issued the statement on behalf of the Inspector General, reaffirming the police’s commitment to serving and protecting all Kenyans.
The violent disruption has sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for swift justice and enhanced security measures to prevent such incidents in the future. As the investigation continues, the public remains vigilant, hoping for a resolution that will bring peace and justice to those affected by the tragic event.
