New Speed Cameras in Nairobi: Locations Motorists Should Know

Kenya’s new automated traffic enforcement system is expanding quickly, with hundreds of speed cameras being installed across major highways and busy roads. The initiative is part of the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) rolled out by the National Transport and Safety Authority to curb speeding and improve road safety.

Under the program, the government plans to deploy around 1,000 smart traffic cameras, including both fixed and mobile units that automatically detect violations and trigger instant fines.

Many of these cameras are positioned along high-risk corridors and major Nairobi highways where speeding and traffic violations are common.

Below are some of the locations motorists should be aware of.

Speed Camera Locations in Nairobi

Recent reports and road monitoring updates indicate cameras or mobile enforcement units operating in the following areas:

1. Safari Park – Thika Road
A camera is positioned along the busy Thika Superhighway section near Safari Park Hotel. This stretch often experiences high speeds due to its multi-lane design.

2. Jomoko – Thika Road Turnoff
Motorists heading toward or from the Jomoko area along Thika Road should be cautious, as speed monitoring has been reported near this junction.

3. Southern Bypass – Near the Virtual Weighbridge
The Southern Bypass is one of the major corridors where speed cameras have been tested and deployed to control speeding on the highway.

4. Northern Bypass – After Gitaru Near Wangige (Mobile Camera)
This area may host mobile speed enforcement cameras that can be moved depending on enforcement operations.

5. Nairobi Expressway – Museum Exit to Westlands
Speed monitoring is reported along the expressway exit heading toward Westlands, an area with heavy traffic flow.

6. Nairobi Expressway – After Nyayo Stadium
Another enforcement point is along the expressway section past Nyayo Stadium, where vehicles often accelerate after leaving the CBD.

Why These Cameras Are Being Installed

The government has been testing and installing digital cameras along major roads such as Thika Superhighway, Southern Bypass, and Mombasa Road to monitor speeding and other violations.

The cameras are connected to a national traffic management system that automatically records offences and can issue digital fines to motorists.

Authorities say the system aims to:

• Reduce road accidents caused by speeding
• Improve compliance with traffic rules
• Reduce corruption associated with manual roadside enforcement
• Enable faster and more transparent ticketing

What Drivers Should Keep in Mind

With the rollout of smart traffic cameras, motorists should be more cautious when driving along major highways in Nairobi.

Important tips include:

• Observe posted speed limits at all times
• Watch for speed limit signage and enforcement zones
• Avoid sudden acceleration near major junctions or bypasses
• Ensure your vehicle details and contact information are updated with NTSA

As the camera network expands, more locations across Nairobi and other major towns are expected to be added in the coming months.
