GRAPHIC: Outrage and Calls for Justice Rise Amidst Growing Gender-Based Violence in Kenya

Nakuru, Kenya – The brutal attack on Florence Wanjiku, a co-director of a land selling company in Nakuru, has sparked a wave of outrage and calls for justice, highlighting the urgent issue of gender-based violence in Kenya. Influential figures, government officials, and the public have rallied in support of Florence, demanding swift action against her attacker, Elias Njeru.

Njeri Wa Migwi, an influencer and businesswoman, brought the incident to light with a detailed Facebook post. Florence, a mother of two, had a business and personal relationship with Elias, which deteriorated over financial disputes. After their relationship ended, Florence faced harassment and threats from Elias, culminating in a violent attack. She was ambushed, hit on the head, and stabbed multiple times outside her apartment. Her fingers were partially severed while she tried to protect herself.
The attack left Florence severely injured, and she was saved by a watchman who rushed her to the hospital. Elias, in a blood-stained shirt, attempted to visit her at the hospital but was denied entry. He also threatened to kill their children if not allowed to see them, but neighbors intervened. Despite the severity of the incident, initial reports to local police stations were dismissed due to jurisdictional issues. The case is now being handled by the Menengai West Police Station.
Governor Susan Kihika of Nakuru County expressed her shock and condemnation of the attack. She assured the public that the county government, through the Department of Social Services, is working closely with the police to bring the perpetrator to justice. “Such barbaric and inhumane behavior cannot and will not be tolerated,” Kihika stated. She also offered support to Florence and her family during this difficult time.
Other prominent figures have also voiced their support. Damaris Wa Dama Spares Original, a friend and investor of Florence, shared her disbelief and called for justice. Public figure Catherine Kamau emphasized the need for church leaders to address gender-based violence within their congregations and urged authorities to arrest Elias. The rallying cry #justiceforFlorenceWanjiku and #justiceforshiku has gained momentum on social media, with widespread demands for Elias’s arrest and prosecution.
The situation comes amid rising concerns over gender-based violence in Kenya. President William Ruto condemned the increasing cases of femicide, describing them as a “pressing and deeply troubling issue” during a press briefing with women leaders. The President unveiled a nationwide campaign against gender-based violence, pledging significant resources to protect women and girls. The government will prioritize psychological assistance and establish safe homes for women and children, with KSh 100 million allocated for the “Safe Homes, Safe Spaces” campaign. In his State of the Nation address, President Ruto urged, “Let us raise men well so that they don’t have to show their masculinity by hurting women.”
The attack on Florence Wanjiku underscores the urgent need for action to address gender-based violence in Kenya. As calls for justice continue to grow, the public and officials alike are united in their demand for a safer and more respectful society for all.
