Mombasa Port Grinds to a Halt as Truck Drivers Strike Over Illegal Charges

Mombasa, Kenya – January 30, 2025 – In a significant escalation of tensions at Mombasa Port, operations have come to a standstill as members of the Long Distance Drivers and Conductors Association (LoDDCA) initiated a strike against what they describe as the exploitation of truck drivers and transporters. The strike, which began today, is in response to the illegal imposition of fees ranging from Kshs 1,000 to 5,000 for the arming of the Regional Electronic Cargo Tracking System (RECTS) seals, a service that by law should be provided free of charge.

The LoDDCA, in a press release issued earlier today, condemned the practice which they claim has led to undue financial burdens, operational inefficiencies, and significant delays in port activities, severely impacting the transport and logistics sector in Kenya. The association has outlined a series of directives to be effective immediately: no trucks will enter the port until the issue is resolved, and no cargo will be armed with RECTS seals until further notice.

The association’s demands are clear and directed towards the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and other relevant authorities. They are calling for an immediate stop to all unauthorized charges related to RECTS arming, accountability for KRA officials involved in turning this process into a profit-making scheme, and a public statement from KRA confirming that RECTS arming is indeed free. Additionally, LoDDCA has demanded disciplinary actions against corrupt officers, including their removal and prosecution, along with the implementation of a more transparent and efficient cargo clearance system to prevent future delays.

“Until our demands are met, no truck shall operate, no cargo shall move, and no business shall proceed at Mombasa Port,” stated the LoDDCA in their release, emphasizing the severity of their stance. The association has called for unity among all stakeholders in the transport sector to combat corruption and exploitation.

This strike not only highlights the ongoing challenges within Kenya’s transport sector but also underscores the need for systemic changes to ensure fair practices. The LoDDCA, representing drivers and conductors, aims to advocate for better working conditions, fair wages, and improved safety measures, with the ultimate goal of uplifting the livelihoods of its members and fostering a thriving transport sector.

For further updates or inquiries, the LoDDCA can be reached at their office in Njeri House, Tom Mboya Street, Nakuru, or via email at info@loddca.or.ke or through their website www.loddca.or.ke

The situation at Mombasa Port remains fluid, with potential impacts on regional trade and logistics. Stakeholders are urged to stay informed as developments unfold.
